Training
This page contains information about the necessary skills that fire fighters acquire during training and the process of becoming a fire fighter.
Academic
For about six months recruits train and study to pass all tests on the path to become a fire fighter. Things that they need to know include:
Building construction, risk management, ventilation, fire behavior, tying knots, hoisting ladders and other tools, forcible entry, locking devices, water supply, fire control, loss control, fire hazards and fire inspections and so much more.
Test taking: If a recruit fails a test they receive one retake and if they fail the retake then they are released.
70% and above is a pass 69% and below is a fail
Skill Tests
Recruits who are training to become fire fighters undergo a series of skill tests. Examples of the skill tests administered include:

- First Aid
- Rope Maintenance
- Hoisting a Ladder
- Operating Tools

Requirements include:
A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from high school and possession of a Hawaii State motor vehicle driver's license (copy submitted with application.)
Examination Weights:
Written test..............100%
Physical agility test...........Qualifying (Pass/Fail)
Physical Condition-Must be able to meet the health and physical condition standards of the position
Vision..............Qualifying (Pass/Fail) Individuals selected for a position with the Department will be require to verify that they meet the minimum vision requirements of the Department.
